That winter, Tom’s mother was visiting. He thought she would be interested in Langlütjen and was determined to go again. My scepticism about this venture turned out to be misplaced.
On one of the only days of sun we’d experienced that summer, we finally made use of a car-sharing scheme we had joined. Tom drove us to the Weser estuary at Nordenham.
We finally moved into more permanent accommodation in Bremen at the beginning of June. The next few weeks were spent sorting through our things, which had been put in storage when we left Berlin. By Sunday 22 June, we were a little more settled and decided to take advantage of the long, although not especially sunny, northern midsummer days.
Tom and I were in England and had stayed the night in Somerset with Alessandra. In the late morning, we drove across to the Hoo peninsula, as I wanted to visit Cliffe fort.
